SHEEP AND GOAT INDUSTRY FUNDING SCHEME (IFS) – MONITORING SPECIES MOVEMENTS THROUGH THREE STRATEGIC GAPS IN THE ESPERANCE EXTENSION OF THE STATE BARRIER FENCE

The inception of the project aimed to meticulously observe and track the intricate movements of various species within the expansive landscape of the Esperance Extension of the State Barrier Fence (SBF). Specifically, the focus has been on the three vital river corridors – Oldfield, Young, and Lort rivers. This undertaking was prompted by initial concerns raised within the agricultural sector about the potential for these gaps to foster an intensified concentration of animal activity in these regions.

In response to these concerns, a comprehensive approach has been adopted. Cameras have been strategically positioned both upstream and downstream along these crucial breaks in the SBF. These cameras are poised to capture and reveal the intricate rhythms of the local wildlife, shedding light on their movements and behaviors within these vital river corridors.

A quarterly camera check schedule has been introduced, serving as a mechanism to closely track and evaluate project progress. These routine checks will enable us to swiftly identify any potential issues and make necessary adjustments.

The project’s progress has experienced a series of delays, primarily stemming from unforeseen setbacks in the construction of the State Barrier Fence. These delays have had a cascading effect on the installation and utilization timeline of the Evorta cameras,An eVorta camera is an innovative and advanced monitoring device designed to capture high-resolution images and data of wildlife and their activities in their natural habitats. These state-of-the-art cameras are equipped with advanced sensors, motion detection technology, and image-capturing capabilities, allowing them to discreetly capture moments of animal movement and behavior, a key component of this endeavor.

With an unwavering commitment to achieving precise and influential results, the decision has been made to extend the project until December 2025. This extension reaffirms our pledge to furnish outcomes of the utmost caliber. By affording additional time for the seamless integration of the Evorta cameras and the meticulous accumulation of comprehensive data, we will establish the essential foundation for a comprehensive analysis. This comparative study will encompass data from both pre and post fence construction periods, allowing us to gain a holistic understanding of the profound impact that the fence construction has on animal movements within these vital corridors.
